The Aarau Theater is a renovation project of an old horse riding hall in Aarau, Switzerland. The challenges presented by this project were to preserve the symbolic history of the building and to meet the strict energy efficiency requirements set by the project owners. The design concept was inspired by the local Bachfischet fesitival, celebrating the 13th century man-made stream which is drained and cleaned annually each September. During this time the entire city is darkened, and adults and children of all ages host a parade singing the traditional Bachfischet song. Children from neighboring schools join together with homemade lanterns to send down the stream once the water returns. The design team addressed the project requirements with a double façade which was built as a single structure to preserve the look and feel of the original materials. The glass façade also creates a high efficiency envelope with insulation, operable windows, and heat recovery.
